Hurricane Ida School Closures Update

9.16.21 Message to Johnson & McNair Families (email-only)

Dear Lycée Families,

As a friendly reminder, grades 3 through 11 will participate in 100% virtual instruction from Monday 9/20/2021 through Thursday 9/23/2021. Due to a staff professional development day, there will be no school for students on Friday, September 24, 2021.

Our faculty, staff, and administrators anticipate a return to 100% in-person learning as soon as environmental clearance is received.  We will provide another update about the status by the end of the day on Thursday, September 23. 2021

As previously mentioned, the Johnson and McNair campuses are NOLA-PS properties and have sustained mold-related issues from Hurricane Ida. Both campuses have received remediation treatments deemed necessary by the NOLA-PS environmental contractors.

Latest update as of 9/16/21 from NOLA Public Schools.

Johnson Campus (3rd – 7th Grade)

  • Additional environmental clearance testing is needed, NOLA-PS will provide us with a clearance date.
  • Results are expected three business days after testing (TBD per NOLA-PS)
  • Once testing results are received and confirmed for environmental issues, we will communicate the re-opening date.

McNair Campus (8th – 11th Grade)

  • Environmental clearance testing is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, 9/17/2021.
  • Results are expected three business days after testing (tentative 9/23/2021 per NOLA-PS).
  • Once testing results are received and confirmed for environmental issues, we will communicate the re-opening date.

We thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we work with NOLA-PS to ensure our campuses are safe to resume in-person instruction. We cannot wait to welcome everyone back to campus warmly.

9.15.21 Back to School Message

Dear Lycée families,

Thank you for your patience and understanding.  Our teachers and staff members are working diligently to prepare high-quality instruction for our students so we can hit the ground running on Monday, September 20! Before we return to school we have several updates and reminders to share.

Returning to School:

Lower School Campus (Patton):  In-Person Instruction

The Lower School Campus will start in-person school on Monday, 9/20/2021. Arrival time is from 8:00am – 8:20am.

Johnson & McNair Campuses – Virtual Instruction
Both the Johnson (Grades 3-7) and McNair (Grades 8-11) campuses will re-start school on Monday, 9/20/2021 via virtual instruction. Additional work conducted on the buildings of both campuses and a delayed testing and clearance process through NOLA-PS has resulted in this determination.

Johnson & McNair – Information about Virtual Learning

Schedules will be shared for virtual learning on Friday, 9/17/2021.  If you need a Chromebook, please stop by the Lower School Campus from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM tomorrow, 9/16/21. Additionally, there will be a limited number of hotspots available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

We expect all students to fully participate in virtual learning. If your child has any extenuating circumstances due to displacement from Hurricane Ida that will create any obstacles to attending virtual learning, please contact your school principal.

When the school campuses reopen, virtual instruction will no longer be offered- with the exception of quarantined classes. We look forward to resuming in-person instruction with all students.

Amended School Calendar – Instructional Minutes

Due to the extended time away from school, we must add some time back into the calendar. After reviewing the time already built into our calendar, considering family needs, and staff feedback; we have added in five instructional days for the remainder of the school year. The following dates, originally scheduled as days off for students and PD days for staff, will now be school days:

  • September 23, 2021 (Please note: September 24th is still a PD day due to CODOFIL scheduling)
  • January 3, 2022
  • February 24, 2022
  • May 30, 2022
  • May 31, 2022

We will notify families should we make any other adjustments to our school calendar.

8.13.21 Academic & COVID 19 Testing Message – Revised due to inclement weather

Revised-Rain-day-Communication-to-families-Week-of-September-13

8.12.21 Academic Message

Dear Lycée families,

As communicated on Friday, Lycée will remain closed until Monday, September 20, due to required operational remediations on our buildings.

In order to support families and students eager to reconnect with school work, our teachers will share educational resources on Tuesday, September 14 by 8:00am. These resources are optional for students to complete as we understand that not all families have the current capacity to engage their child(ren) in school work. These resources are a review of skills covered within the first few weeks of school. They do NOT cover any new material, they will NOT be graded, and students who are not able to complete them will NOT be penalized. They are to be considered as educational opportunities for students who have the capacity to complete them.

These activities are not the equivalent of a full day of school work. Families can refer to the table below for guidance on how much time to spend daily on these activities:

Grade levelPre-K4K1st2nd3rd4th5th
Recommended daily time limit20-30 mn30-45 mn45-60 mn45-60 mn60-75 mn60-75 mn60-75 mn

Recommended daily time limit75-90mn75-90mn75-90mn90-150mn90-150mn90-150mn

While these resources will be shared remotely (via email for grades pre-k-5 or on Google classroom for grades 6-11), printed copies will also be available for pick up at the lower campus (5951 Patton Street).  In addition, students in 3-7th grade who have not already checked out a Chromebook will be able to do so during these pick up times.  These Chromebooks will be assigned to students for the year and will be necessary for preparation for possible virtual learning.  Please see below for details:

  • Tuesday, September 14 from 2:00-4:00pm. Material Pickup will take place via the carpool line:
  • To enter the schoolyard, vehicles must access Constance St. via Nashville lakebound
  • Place a sign in your front driver’s side window with the student’s name, grade  and homeroom teacher
  • Parents/guardians are asked to wear a mask during carpool material pickup
  • Staff members will be available to provide educational resources packets by grade level (PreK – 2, 3- 5, 6-8 and 9-11) and students in 3-7th grade who have not already checked out a chromebook will be able to do so
  • Wednesday, September 15 from 8:30-4:00pm at the same time as COVID-testing is taking place via the large playground (Constance Street). Staff members will be available to provide educational resources packets by grade level (PreK – 2, 3- 5, 6-8 and 9-11). Students in 3-7th grade who have not already checked out a chromebook will be able to do so during these pick up times.  These chromebooks will be assigned to students for the year and will be necessary in preparation for possible virtual learning.

Additionally, our school buses will be running on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning, and Wednesday afternoon to distribute these educational resources packets as well as water and snacks for students at the different bus stops. Some of our faculty and staff will also be riding on these buses as a way to reconnect with students and families.

The specific bus routes schedules will be shared in a follow-up email.

For families looking for supplemental resources in French, you can refer to this document, which was previously shared on September 3rd.

9.9.21 Message

Dear Lycée Families:

It is our sincere hope that you are well and that your lives are beginning to return to a normal cadence in spite of lingering challenges. Our priority is returning safely to the LFNO campuses, which is essential to our students and staff members’ wellbeing. Power has been restored to our lower school campus and final assessments of the building will be complete by Friday, September 10. Our operations team has worked with NOLA-PS to perform a final assessment of the Johnson and McNair buildings. Unfortunately, based on the final assessment, both buildings will need to be remediated for mold by NOLA-PS, as both campuses fall under their jurisdiction. The current timeline provided by NOLA-PS will allow for students to return to campus no sooner than Monday, September 20th.

There are some additional challenges surrounding the ability to provide nutritious meals to our students. Our food service provider, Genuine Foods, is unable to commit to being fully functional until Monday, September 20. We are pleased to announce that Absolute Royal, our transportation provider, has confirmed they are prepared for full operations once school resumes.

Our reopening plan is to have students return on Monday, September 20, 2021.

  • Lower School Campus: In person instruction.
  • Johnson & McNair Campuses: Potentially in person or virtual, depending on the progress of mold remediation by NOLA-PS.

In an effort to maintain our current instructional minute calendar, we will make up lost instructional time.  An updated calendar will be provided to our community.

Before returning to campus, we urge all students to get a COVID-19 test to keep school buildings safe and prevent quarantines. LFNO has partnered with LDH and Omega Diagnostics testing to provide FREE weekly COVID testing for all staff starting on Wednesday, September 15. Registration information will be shared soon via email.

Please stay safe and stay tuned for updates as circumstances are rapidly changing. We thank you for your patience and flexibility throughout this challenging time. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your campus principal with any questions or concerns.

See you soon,

The LFNO Leadership Team

9.7.21 Message

Dear Lycée Families,

In the immediate aftermath of the storm city officials warned that the power could be out for an extended period, which led LFNO to announce a closure through September 17th to allow staff and families to properly plan for temporary housing. Thankfully, the recovery from Hurricane Ida is moving quicker than expected.

As of today, power has been restored to the McNair and Johsnon campuses. We are awaiting the restoration of power to the lower school campus. As all essential services continue to come online, our operations team will continue to assess the facilities and make the necessary preparations for reopening.

Due to the rapid restoration efforts in the Greater New Orleans Area and alignment with NOLA-PS , the operations and administrative teams have had to reassess and adjust the reopening date.  Dependent on the full restoration of essential services, staff and resource capacity, meal services, transportation, security, and building readiness; the administration anticipates reopening during the week of September 13th. We are awaiting guidance from the LDOE on the loss of instructional minutes, and will communicate the make-up guidance to our families as soon as possible. Accommodations will be made for families who cannot return to the city until the initially communicated date of September 17th, please email your child’s principal to coordinate. We will update all Lycee families on the expected reopening date by Thursday, September 9th.

We can’t wait to see all of our students, staff and families soon!

Danielle Dufauchard
Interim CEO/Lower School Principal

9.3.21 Message

Dear Lycée  Families,

My sincerest thoughts are with all of our Lycee families as we recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. It is easy for many to say “Let’s resume operations as normal.” Our new norm in New Orleans is not so normal – power outages and a shortage of basic necessities in the midst of a pandemic. As a mother of three Lycée students, I understand the impact that this traumatic experience has had on our families. The welfare of our staff, students and community is of the utmost importance to me. Here is a listof resources that may be of assistance to you. I am requesting that parents/guardians complete the following survey for each student attending Lycée by Friday, September 10. While our present norm may seem dismal, I find solace in the strength, resilience and perseverance of the Lycée and New Orleans community.

Sincerely,
Danielle Dufauchard
Interim CEO/Lower School Principal

9.1.21 Message

Dear Lycée Families,

We hope this message finds everyone safe and well. Over the last few days, the administration has been assessing the state of our facilities and staying abreast of restoration efforts throughout the Greater New Orleans Area.  All campuses have sustained minimal damages.

At this time, we have decided to not reopen neither our administrative offices nor our school buildings until at least Friday, September 17, 2021.

By September 7, 2021, you will receive an additional update from the administration.  In the interim, please check our website, www.lfno.org, for further information and updates.  Additionally, please be safe and continue to monitor the alerts sent by NOLAReady and Jefferson Parish Officials.

-The Leadership Team

8.30.21 Message

Dear Lycée Families,

Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, Lycée will follow the recommendations of New Orleans Public Schools and close school until further notice. With broad power outages, it is unclear at this time when school will resume. We will keep you updated as we move forward with post-storm recovery efforts.

We hope you and your loved ones are safe and secure.

Take care, stay safe.

Sincerely,

Danielle Dufauchard
Lower School Principal / Interim CEO

8.29.21 Message

Dear Lycée families,

We hope you and your family are safe.

All  Lycée Français campuses will be closed through Tuesday, August 31. Should this timeline be adjusted, then we will communicate as soon as possible.

Continue to remain strong and safe. We will make it through this time together.

Stay safe,

Whether you have been with Lycée for the past 10 years or just joined the Lycée community this year, this session will help you better understand the school’s complex academic identity: a Louisianan public school and a French school, accredited by the French Ministry of Education.

Some of the questions addressed in this session include:
•What does it mean to be a French-American school?
•What is the difference between a French immersion program and a French accredited school?
•What are the non-negotiable of the French and the Louisiana systems and their impact on academics?
•What does our academic program look like overall from preK4 to 12th grade?
•What are the different pathways in High school?

UPDATE: Bus Transportation & Start of the School Year.

Dear Lycée Families,

As relayed in our previous message, we are providing an update on bus transportation services and the start of the 2021-2022 school year. As of now, PK4 – 7th grade will have in-person instruction starting Monday, August 16th!  Please note: All Pre-K4 and Kindergarten students will start at the same time, no staggered start date.

Current status: At this time, our transportation provider is working to secure more buses to operate all routes as planned and previously communicated to families.

Our plan moving forward: One of the two temporary options listed below will be communicated by noon on Saturday, August 14th :

  • Option 1: A tiered arrival and dismissal model will be implemented, which may require adjusting the Lower Campus and Johnson start and stop times.
  • Option 2: Bus routes will be consolidated to ensure all students have access to transportation.

*Both options will require changes to bus stop times and potentially bus stop locations.

Next steps: If needed, updated routes and or start and stop times will be communicated via email by 4PM on Sunday, August 15.

Reminder:  8th – 11th graders are scheduled to start school on Thursday, August 19 at the McNair Campus.

Merci,

13.  What is Lycee doing to keep my child safe?

Lycee will continue to follow the mitigation measures set forth by the Louisiana Department of Health, LDOE,  and LCMC Children’s Hospital. Should these guidelines change, we will communicate these changes to our community.

14. Should the close contact definition of “15 minutes of exposure within 6 feet” be in one setting or should it be viewed in a cumulative manner?

On Wednesday, October 21, 2020, the CDC updated their guidance to state: “Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period* starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.”

16. Will air purifiers be placed in every classroom?

Some air purifiers will be placed on each campus. As we receive our shipment of air purifiers, these will be distributed amongst each campus.
